Gospel Brunch with Redneck Mimosa - 12noon-3pm
822 Locust Street
Hendersonville, NC 28792

Price: free free free

Reverend Cleophus James says: “When I woke up this morning I heard a disturbing sound. What I heard was the jingle-jangle of too many wayward souls puttering around their places of dwelling instead of putting on their Sunday Fineriest and joining in the fun at Redneck Mimosa’s Gospel Brunch. Get thee to the brewery, sinner, lest your path be over-run with blah and humdrum!” Wise words. Very.

But fret and/or fear not, friends and/or neighbors, because your buddies in King Possum will spend this particular Saturday night fiercely fighting back Monday’s arrival one song at a time just exactly like a roadflare-wielding frogfella squaring off against some atrocity from the deepest depths. We hope to see you there. Bring your own swimfins.

We might even have a Mallardite or two in the crowd. We don't ask. We don't judge.  We just gather and drink and sing and drink some more and sing some more. And hey here's some great news: our friends with Farm to Fender told me that they'll be staying later on Sundays so you can have a second brunch. That's how we Sunday. Come join us!

Also, for the Mallardites among us: this is a bring your own junebugs venue so pack accordingly. Just fyi.

Jenny's stopping for Round 2 on her way back to Texas. We had a large time at Round 1 and we'll have more of the same this time. Except we'll play different songs this time. Except we'll do "To Live's To Fly" again because I do, in fact, know that song. I seem to develop a lyrical blindspot whenever I try to play it with Jenny. This time I'll practice. Anyway...come join us for a fun time right in the midst of the workweek. Earlier show in consideration of your dayjob.

I’ll be providing the ambience (read: music) for the “postcard party” hosted by the Progressive Women of Hendersonville. PWH hosts these events every Friday. Because how else are those various elected officials going to know what we think? That's right: they won't. Democracy works best when we the people participate. That’s what I think, anyhow. These gatherings are also a great opportunity to meet some neighbors and discuss what’s going on in this country of ours. While drinking delicious hand-crafted beer. Yes.

Official blurb for this service: "Todd and Meg Hoke share through music and reflection how the practice of "5 Happy Things" has impacted their life. When people hear about our work, they often say "How do you do that? It's so depressing!" 5 Happy Things is part of what keeps us balanced. This presentation describes a practice that has helped Meg and Todd work with hospice services for a combined 30+years. This is a 3 step practice that is simple, do-able, and useful as a way to discover the positive even while acknowledging the sadness and pain that we wade into on an almost daily basis."

King Possum understands. There is an ever widening array of fascinating videographed amusements available to entertain and/or distract you 24/7/365. We get it. And we understand the temptation to sit there with no pants on and a bowl of nibbles and a can of suds and just sit there and just sit there and just sit there.

King Possum understands the temptation to make this choice. But King Possum also misses seeing your lovely face and we'd love to play a song or 20 for you while the charming staff at Sanctuary pours pints of it'll all be all right by and by. So. We hope you will put on some pants and come join us. Thatisall.

Opening for Mark Stuart - 7:30pm
3105 Beach Blvd.
Jacksonville, FL 32216 [map]
Price: $20 (maybe--contact the venue to make sure)

I'm opening a show for Mark Stuart who--among other things--is the life and music making partner of Stacey Earle. The Ricky to her Lucy, if you will. Or the Fred to her Ethel if you will not. Rather than expound on Mark and his music I'm just going to copy info from the email I received promoting this show (including their blurb about me for contrast):

Mark Stuart went to the finest of music schools. Mark started his schooling listening and admiring his uncle's guitar playing and his Dad's fiddling. Learning and listening to the greats. He would find himself playing in the School of Honky Tonks and Beer Joints in and around Nashville by age 15 in his Dad's band. By age 17 Mark had formed his own band, made a record, and still found the time to play on the road as lead guitar and supporting vocalist for acts like Freddy Fender (and more)--this would take him into his 20s. Mark was in off the road when he first met Stacey Earle and that very night he would play the first note of her music and has never left her side. Mark has still somehow found the time to work on his own music, including recording a solo record and touring. Mark also spent some time in "The Dukes" (Steve Earle's band) in the 1990s. Like Earle, Mark recalls it as a time of glamour.

Todd Hoke does not sing songs about rainbows, unicorns, or dolphins. Elves nor fairies neither. It's good to know this up front about Todd Hoke.

Man. I hope the audience doesn't get us confused.

This'll be Redneck Mimosa's 3rd Easter in a row at Southern Appalachian Brewery and this year we've decided to have an Easter Bonnet Contest. There will be a moderately awesome prize for the winner. Not sure who's judging. Probably Mrs. Hoke because she's good at it. In the event of a tie contestants will have to wrassle for the prize. Though not competing I already have a fairly good idea for my bonnet, in case you wondered. Good luck.

To review: she does the talking bits and I do the music bits (though I think she wrote a song to go with her talk so she might do some of the music bits as well for this one). She's always got good stuff to say. Hope to see some familiar faces in the room.

There is also delicious hand-crafted beer available to help get your self-expression flowing. And I'll be sitting in the corner wearing a pussyhat playing some songs (not sure that helps with the self-expression but it's true anyhow). Hope to see you there.

Tomoka Marathon - 6am-12noon
Ormond Beach, FL [map]
Price: $100

I know you don't care about this, really, but once a year for a while now I've done a marathon and if you go run 26.2 miles you can tell me about it and I'll feign interest. I will be listening to Steve Earle during this race so you can do likewise if you want to simulate the experience or whatever. Or you can kick in the money and come run with me. That would be a first for both of us, I'd venture. Anyway. I'm doing this. And will probably bore folks on Facebook with details later. Blah blah blah...

Some days you're the bathingsuit beauty high atop the gleaming city brandishing the bigfish you caught by yourself with naught but a canepole and the can of grubs you dug up with your own perfectly manicured mitts. And some days? Some days you're the hobo in the bus depot craving a can of beanieweanie. Life can be like that. For one night--THIS one night--King Possum will lift up the low and mash down the mighty. We will beat swords into plowshares. We will balance your checkbook. We will solve for X. We will split the atom and then paste it back together.

And yes: We will drink beer and we will play the very best music we can manage to play with our own perfectly manicured mitts. We hope--fervently hope--you and your glorious personage are there so we can gaze admiringly at you every now and then. (NOTE: This is a bring your own bigfish event so plan and pack accordingly.)

She does the speaking bits. I do the music bits. We have been told over and over that this is a "wonderful service" so either it is or we have been lied to over and over. We're going to do it for the nice folks at the UU Church of the Highlands anyhow. If you know anyone in that area give 'em a nudge in our direction. Or don't. I'm not really the boss of you, am I?

I love doing these shows with Mare and Country and am grateful for the folks who show up every month. And I remain surprised that here--two years in--I STILL have local friends who say "yeah--I need to make it to one of those." We all take things for granted. I used to think Three's Company would be around forever but it's been years and years and no-one has any idea what happened to Chrissy and I hear tell that The Regal Beagle was shuttered for health code violations sometime during the Clinton era. My point? Don't have one, really, but these shows are fun and if you are one of my local friends who hasn't been to one yet I'm leaning on you hard to change that asap. In advance: you're welcome.

Come join us anyhow for an evening of fun and frolic. (Note: there probably won't actually be any frolic but there will be beer a-plenty to make up for the lack of frolic.)

From UUCSV's website: "We welcome back Meg and Todd Hoke, who presented a service entitled “Five Happy Things” a few years ago.   This service builds on the themes Todd and Meg have spoken on before – paying attention to the world around, deciding how you will relate to it, and then sharing and connecting with it.   In this presentation, Meg discusses her experiences in “BEING” through her work with inner city kids and hospice and how the experience of the very personal and profound connects us to the “Universe”.   As Meg talks, Todd plays music echoing these sentiments.  It’s a little bit of a quieter, more poignant presentation than their last service, but they hope you will find it to be uplifting and powerful as well."

I was lucky enough to be part of a bunch of fun shows in 2015, and the Gospel Brunch show with Redneck Mimosa and Asheville Second Line was right up at the top of the funstuff list. No kidding, this is something you want to clear your calendar for. If you don't know, Asheville Second Line is a parade band in the tradition of New Orleans. They're big, brassy, and a delight to work with. Pack up your neighbors and come join us!

Back at SAB with King Possum. We missed Paul last month so we'll trot out the new songs we've been working on and didn't get to in November. And I have a couple more new ones that we'll try on and/or test out. And probably a seasonal tune or two. Tom Waits' birthday is in December so we'll do the stuff of his that we know. And, again, I'm hoping to work up a new one or two. New songs, I guess, it what this show will feature. And delicious beer. And if history is any indication, there will be a foodtruck in the lot plating up edibles.

Me & Ethan Crump Opening for Ben Bedford - 7pm
Lebanon, Tennessee [map]
Price: $20 Suggested Donation

Hillbilly Haiku is a wonderful concert series hosted by my good friends Denise and Rick Williams. The photo is from the last time I played there--that's Kelly Keene and Ben Bedford with me lurking in the background. Here's their plug for this show:

"We'll be ending our year on a very high note with these three songwriters in the living room! This will truly be a celebration of storytellers. Ben delivers historically accurate characters and makes you care about them. Todd IS an historically accurate character that will keep you amused with his quirky wit. And Ethan is just getting started but already proving himself an observer of   life with the gift to put stories down in melody and rhyme. Please join us for a memorable evening of stories in song."

I always wanted to be an historically accurate character. Hope you'll join us if you're able and if you know anyone in/around Lebanon, TN (near Nashville) please nudge them in our direction!

It'll be me and my harmonicas and guitar and toejangler and Brian Kalinec and his guitars and Sandy Buller and his upright bass and tuba. It will be fun or I'm leaving. I have been told that they've never had a tuba at The Red Brick Tavern, nevermind Gospel Brunchtime Tuba. All downtown in my hometown.

Worth noting that the last time I played at Red Brick Tavern people pointed at me and I don't really like that sort of thing. It actually was just this one guy. I'm hoping that this being a Gospel Brunchtime Show will eliminate that sort of unseemly behavior.

We're getting the band back together! My friends at UUFH asked if I would re-gather the players for this special concert and they have all graciously agreed. I don't know when or if this will happen again so I--for super serious--advise you to get your tickets and get yourself there.

King Possum’s first time at Blue Ghost but, again, not my first time visiting this brewery. I go test every room I play at, see? Because I just don’t much want to play somewhere I wouldn’t want to hang out at otherwise and how could I ask y’all to come hang out somewhere I wouldn’t hang out at myself? I couldn’t. And don’t. Anyway—I was there one day last week dropping off flyers for this gig and sat outside with a beer and my guitar (I was on the way to rehearse with King Possum—see how much we love y’all?) and if you ever want to have a sort of quiet handcrafted beer while sitting under a big tree I recommend this spot. I’ll be returning to do this very thing again, I’m sure.

Also: In the past, folks have been so rapturous after a King Possum performance that they have danced on rooftops. Our attorneys have advised us to advise you/y'all to refrain from such behaviors as they are dangerous and might damage your high heeled footwear. Thatisall.

Celebrating the Songs of Kerry Polk - Doors @ 2:30pm; Concert @ 3:00pm
Bastrop, Texas [map]
Price: Suggested Dontation: $15 in advance/$20 at the door

I played a lovely show at Arhaven House Concerts earlier this year with my buddy George Ensle and am happy to be returning for this show benefiting my buddy Kerry Polk. Here are some words from Arhaven's website: Bev and I have been big fans of Kerry Polk's songwriting since the first time we heard Polk, Barton, and Towhead sing Home of the Brave.  Kerry penned half the songs on the Polk, Barton, and Towhead album, The Way Things Are.    In 2004, Kerry released a solo album with 11 of her own songs.  Between the two albums, there are 16 songs written by Kerry that have been released.  Many of the songs reflect on her life, growing up in the deep South.  All are gems.

Due to health problems, Kerry is no longer able to perform.  For this very special concert, 13 performers will each perform one song of Kerry's and one of their own.  All donations will go to Kerry to help offset ongoing medical expenses.

It's going to be a special show. No doubt. Hope to see you there.

Cedar Creek, Texas [map]
Price: $15 in advance. $20 at the door.

So. I'd been thinking for a while about stuff I'd like to do and one thing on my list was to do a show with George Ensle swapping songs and telling stories and giving out moustache grooming tips. Our friends Bev and Joe Angel agreed to let us do it at Arhaven House Concerts and it's going to be a big fun time. In addition to being a great guitarist and rock-solid songwriter, George is flat out one of the nicest humans I know. Mutual friend Richard Brock will be along with his harmonicas to add a note here and there. I presume there will be food to eat and drink to drink. Tie off the hog and come join us. (For those of you who like to save money I'll point out that you can save a bit by getting your tickets in advance. You're welcome.)

Song Swap with Jenny Reynolds - Doors: 6:30pm Music: 7:00pm
135 Alves Lane
New Braunfels, Texas 78130 [map]
Price: $15

My good friend Jenny Reynolds and I will be trading and/or swapping songs at this show. Our pal Richard Brock and his boxfull of harmonicas will be joining us. We've actually done something similar to this the last couple of years when I roll through Austin after the Kerrville Folk Festival and it's a danged good time every time--persons who may or may not be my parents have even driven over from Conroe to enjoy the musical offerings.

The UUs of New Braunfels--good folks every one--will have food and drink on hand to fill your belly. It's a great room and I'm really looking forward to this show. If you're in the area I hope you'll join us. Or alert your loved ones in the area to come join us. Or load up your loved ones and all y'all come join us. I think that covers it.

Sometimes. Sometimes you’ll be standing there styling and minding your own and doing no harm and life will sneak up on you like a necktie-wearing tabby wielding a Louisville Slugger and clock you right upside your inner tranquility. Fear not, comrades. Fear. Not.

Your friends in King Possum are here to buoy your spirits and soothe your hurts with an evening of song. Also: beer. Y’all come.

King Possum + Redneck Mimosa Mashup and/or Throwdown - 7pm
743 Haywood Road
Asheville, NC 28806 [map]
Price: $10

This particular show will blend two projects that I put together in 2015. The first is my band: King Possum (which includes David Cohen on drums, Bill Pillmore on bass, and Paul Songy on guitar). King Possum plays a healthy sampling of my original material in addition to songs we've collectively agreed are worth playing more than once (Guy Clark, Townes Van Zandt, Hank Williams Sr., and the like).

Also in 2015 I founded a monthly Gospel Brunch series with my friends Mare Carmody and Michael “Country” Carver (the trio is known as “Redneck Mimosa”). Mare and Country will be standing in as the “harmony singers” for this show and the night will include a selection or two from Redneck Mimosa’s catalog.

It will be large. It will be fun. I hope to see you there.

Yeah. So. Your visit with The Man In Red might not have gone as well as you’d hoped. We’ve all been there. Some of us have been there more than once. Truly. Fret not, neighbors, for your pals in King Possum will be offering up an evening of tinsel-draped musical amusements and/or distractions as we roll into Christmas week.

You better watch out. You better not cry. You better brush-n-floss between meals or you are putting yourself at increased risk for gingivitis down the road. Y’all come.

Okay. So if I do not debut my brand new electric guitar (a Fender American Deluxe Telecaster Thinline in “Olympic White”—thanks for asking) at The Poe House on 11/4 I will surely debut it this night with King Possum. Or I’ll re-debut it. Either way: it will be played with conviction and…um…something else. “Alacrity” doesn’t seem right for a Telecaster. On behalf of the whole band I’d like to encourage you to bring your leftover Thanksgiving pies to this gig. We are here to help. And now I’m realizing that this is the Saturday after “Black Friday” which makes it the only Saturday in the year to be one-upped by a Friday. I think that’s right. Is that right? I think that’s right. Please show this Saturday that you still think it’s important by showing up to this gig.

Mrs. Hoke and I will be sharing “5 Happy Things” with the good folks at Thoreau Woods UU Church for their morning service. I believe that our friend Rich Brock will be joining us to add some harmonica to the morning’s music (he did this with us in New Bern, NC, last year and it was large fun having him along for the morning). In case you don’t know: she does the talking bits and I do the music bits. It’s a fun service.

My good friend Rich Brock will be driving over from Austin for this show to add a little harmonica to the evening’s proceedings. And my other good friend Scott McCarley (pictured here pointing at me rudely) will be opening the show for us. Mrs. Hoke and I will have driven in from Mandeville that day so will be chockfull of tales about Mandeville. We will be doing some research beforehand on why the city’s forefathers settled on Mandeville instead of Mandetown or Mandeburg or The Woodlands and will have a Powerpoint ready to go for your edification or whatever.

This photo is from December of 2013. I've played more or less monthly at The Poe House since I tricked them into letting me do it the first time (when Derek met me he said "You look like a musician" to which I wish I had responded "You look like a supermodel" but I think I said something less amazing). In the intervening days and months they have added a back room (which is now becoming the bar and will soon have craft cocktails in addition to their stellar beer and wine selection) and there's a designated stage for performers (in this photo we've shoved a table over a bit and then shoved me and my gear in the smallish hole).

A few months ago I started toting a songbook to my Poe House gigs and play a bunch of songs I sort of know mostly but maybe not entirely (drink up--you'll never know the difference). I'll probably have someone sitting in with me on guitar or sitar or bagpipes or something. That is all the information you need for this event.

Howdy Hombres. Listen: your amigos in King Possum (that's myself along with David Cohen, Bill Pillmore, and Paul Songy) know how tiring a day of doggie-punching and lariat-twirling can be on a cowhand. Sometimes it feels like the week’s end will never arrive but remains forevermore shimmering along the next ridge like some beery mirage. We understand this. And so we do offer this mid-week oasis of live handcrafted music to quench your thirst for something other than work and televised distraction.

Mosey in. Get refreshed. Finish the week with a jingle-jangle in your spurs. (Note: If jingle-jangle lasts more than 4 hours seek medical attention.)

Hendersonville, NC 28739 [map]
Price: free free free

This is the 3rd talk Mrs. Hoke and I have cobbled together. She presents the message. I take care of the music. Our services are generally fun and smilemaking and a nice enough way to spend an hour of your Sunday morning. Here's a blurb that points toward what we'll be discussing at the service:

Sharing one’s creative work is akin to leaping off the high dive. Naked. In public. So why pursue a creative life? Why take the risk of making art? Because it can save your soul and heal the world in the process. This Sunday we will reflect on taking the risk and inviting the butterflies into your gut.

When Meg’s not being a social worker and Todd’s not being a nurse at Elizabeth House, they can be found playing music, listening to live music, drawing sidewalk chalk mandalas, and pursuing various other creative outlets in the comfort of their home with two curious dogs.

To date, Todd’s greatest creative achievement was gluing hundreds and hundreds of beads on a Honda Civic. Meg can’t nail down just one, but she has undertaken some pretty fancy knitting projects.

Me and my noisemakers will be making some noise as you drink top quality beer and/or wine. I will undoubtedly have some new songs I’ll be trying out and perhaps special guests will join me onstage. I’m not saying I’ve invited anyone but the thing about really truly special guests is that they will just show up and magic will happen. Or sometimes they will show up and eat all your lunch meat and forget to lock the front door when they leave. My point is that one cannot ever really tell about special guests. Bless their hearts.

Update: Hey Neighbors (and persons reading this from overseas). Hey. This is tonight. Bill Pillmore is going to do some of his songs for us tonight as the evening rolls along--that's a treat you NEVER get with all the nonsense I put King Possum through.

Mare, Country, and I rehearsed yesterday and have a few new songs worked up that we’ll debut at August’s Gospel Brunch Show—fun stuff. We also ran through a few songs we didn’t play last time and they just fell into place. That, friends, is seriously gratifying. We’ll be taking a break from Gospel Brunching after the October show so if you haven’t made it to one yet you would be well advised to get on with it already lest you be cast adrift in the wilderness with the thorny bushes and gnashing teeth and whatnot.

I think I last played at Parker-Binns sometime last summer and they sent me an email a month or two ago asking me to come back and serenade the vineyard and grapeheads again. So that’s what I’ll be doing on this afternoon in August. Vineyards are usually lovely, and Parker-Binns is no exception—there are idyllic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains out beyond their fields. They’ve started doing some food on Saturdays so Mrs. Hoke and I will be taking advantage of that, I’m sure.

What better way to celebrate than at The Poe House with her once again squandering her evening listening to my nonsense? None better! Our friend Paul Songy will be along to help dress up the event with his fashion sensibilities and guitarworkings. I hope you'll come out to and keep her company. Mrs. Hoke likes company when she is once again squandering her evening etc.

Downtown In My Hometown - 9:30pm
119 Simonton Street
Conroe, Texas 77301 [map]
Price: free free free

I have spent a lot of time in downtown Conroe. I used to buy ice cream sodas from Carter's Drug Store and comic books from Capitol Drug Store and later barbecue sandwiches at Casey Jones' BBQ. I've had my hair cut at every barbershop in/around the square. Even shaved at a couple of them. I delivered office supplies for...shoot...what was the name of that office supply place that was on the square for so long? I can't remember. My friend Ryan Kinney used to work at Gentry's and I'd go in and distract him from his actual job. I spent many many hours at Montgomery County Public Library back when it was downtown. I would go poke around in True Value Hardware mostly because I loved the smell of the place--engine oil and feed and burlap. Plus the hardwood floors. I caught a bus to Houston for a couple of years from the Trailways station to see a therapist (many miles and years later and I'm okay and you're okay and it's all okay if the check's okay). I drank beer at the domino parlor. I've seen plays and heard music at The Creighton. And more that I cannot recall. This particular evening I'll be playing and singing for whoever stumbles into this lovely little joint right on the square. I hope y'all will join me. I hope the train rolls through while I'm playing. If it does I'm going to stop and go outside to listen.

We presented "5 Happy Things" last year for the Comal County UUs and had a wonderful morning with this lovely group of folks. They enjoyed Mrs. Hoke enough to overlook my shortcomings and invited us back to share another morning with them. Here's a little info about the presentation we'll be...um...presenting:

"The Act of Being" builds on the themes Todd and Meg have spoken on before - paying attention to the world around you, deciding how you will relate to it, and then sharing and connecting with it.   In this presentation, Meg discusses her experiences in "BEING" through her work with inner city kids and hospice and how the experience of the very personal and profound connects us to the "Universe".   As Meg talks, Todd plays music echoing these sentiments.  It's a little bit of a quieter, more poignant presentation than "5 Happy Things," but Meg & Todd hope you will find it to be uplifting and powerful as well.

Something else: I spent an afternoon cobbling together a “King Possum Page” on my website and invite you to check it out and let me know what you think (the purpose is to point venues and/or foreign dignitaries to this page when I’m working on booking the band somewhere so they can have an idea of what it is we do). This will be Volume III of my post-SERFA show at SAB. This year it will feature Jefferson Ross (who has a brand new album and I think will also have some of his fantastic art with him [http://jeffersonross.com/]), Kerry Grombacher (one of the wittiest and best dressed persons I know [http://www.kgrombacher.com/]), and myself in the round sharing songs and wearing big hats. If tradition holds, there will also be beer available for purchase and consumption. This year’s show is a bit shorter time-wise because I’ll be 46 at this show and pacing is very important at my age. Or the age I will be then. You know what I mean. I know some of these songwriter in the round things are just songwriters with guitars and while we will have guitars there will also be (in alphabetical order): banjo(s), harmonica(s), mandolin, porchboard bass, steel bodied guitar (yes, a guitar but still different), toejangler, and ukulele. All this for the low low price of free. You lucky people.

My friends Kelly & James (collectively known as "Letters to Abigail") have asked me to sit in as the host for this weekly round-robin songswap thing that happens at Black Bear Cafe in downtown Hendersonville. As a host I look to bring a little more discipline to the proceedings than Kelly, with her warm smile and welcoming overallness, typically brings. A poke with the chair and/or a snap of the whip is just what this ragtag group needs. Play the song, Simba! Play the song!

Mothers. I’ve got one. You’ve got one. England has one. Here’s the thing about mothers: they will feign delight at the lousy breakfast in bed that you bring them on Mother’s Day but what they want—what they really want—is for you to put on a clean shirt and drive them to Southern Appalachian Brewery for the Mother’s Day Gospel Brunch. Redneck Mimosa (Mare Carmody, Michael "Country" Carver, and Todd Hoke) will be playing all of your mother’s Gospelly favorites. Farm To Fender will do the cooking. SAB will provide the beverage(s) to take her mind off the many many ways you have disappointed her over the years. Your Mother is counting on you. Don’t let her down. Again.

Farm to Fender will be on hand to quell your hunger and the crew at SAB will quench your thirst with each and every gloryfilled pintglass. Shun the tempter Rabbitgod with his basketfull of sins, neighbors. Shun Him or know the lingering anguish of the forlorn and forsaken Peepeaters. Verily. Very verily indeed.

The Poe House
Beer and/or Wine. Music. Repeat. - 7-10pm
105 1st Avenue West
Hendersonville, NC 28792 [map]
Price: free free free

Last time I played at The Poe House I had an amplification revelation: I moved my PA system behind me (it's that skinny black column off my left side) so it served as a monitor and no longer looms over the nice folks sitting at the front table. Wow. I could hear myself without cranking the whole thing up to overpower the chatter in the room. You probably don't care about this but it made me happy so I'm sharing it anyhow. Not pictured is the Frontporch Bass that I debuted this night--it's a cool gadget. Basically a stompbox that sounds like a bass kickdrum. Or--in the confines of The Poe House--the beating of a heart stowed 'neath the floorboards. Paul Songy will be joining me again with his tasty guitar playing and maybe this nice guy (whose name I didn't retain) will show up again and sing with me. This picture is one Mrs. Hoke shot somewhere in the midst of the set of Townes Van Zandt songs I did that night and he hopped up and added some nice harmonies to "Tecumseh Valley."

Beer. Music with KING POSSUM. Repeat. - 6-8pm
342 Mountain Industrial Drive
Brevard, NC 28712 [map]
Price: free free free

I’ve only ever played at Oskar Blues with Bill or Paul lending support and the average fellow would go duo, trio, quartet, right? But life is a short and uncertain undertaking, friends, and who among us knows when we will pass this way again and so we are skipping directly to full on King Possum. Yessir. That’s how we do. This time, anyhow. If you happen to know nice folks in/around Brevard kindly nudge them in the direction of this here show. We thank you.

Beer. KING POSSUM. Repeat. - 7pmish-10pmish
822 Locust Street
Hendersonville, NC 28792
USA [map]
Price: free free free

I am telling you people: King Possum is getting better and better. If I were you (or y’all if a couple of you are reading this at once) I would get to a King Possum show before we peak and start the runaway plummet into the thorny crevasse of Loverboy coversongs as has happened to so many promising groups. Sad. Sadder. Saddest.

On a brighter note: I've been told--and believe--that a truckload of delicious going by the name of Farm to Fender will be at SAB for this show. This will make Mrs. Hoke very happy. I'm going to wait until I do something to irritate her before I share the news. Which is to say I'll probably tell her before I finish typing th...yep. Had to tell her. Oh well.

Run. Run. Run. Repeat. - 8am Start.
Ellerbe, NC [map]
Price: No Charge To Spectate.

This will be my 9th marathon and the smallest I’ve been a part of (entrants are capped at 100). I started training in mid-November and will have run 475 miles by the time I lace up my shoes in Ellerbe. I am totally expecting to win my division (that being 45 year old males answering to “Todd Hoke.”) I might be doing a live commentary on Facebook during the race. Befriend me if that sounds worth your time. It might be amusing—I don’t really know yet.

Redneck Mimosa. Gospelmusic. Repeat. (AKA: Gospel Brunch) - 12noonish-3pmish
822 Locust Street
Hendersonville, NC 28792
USA [map]
Price: free free free

Man oh man oh man oh MAN oh man we had a big fun time at the first ever Gospel Brunch—within the 28792 zipcode—back in January. The sun was shining. The faces were smiling. The beer was flowing. Honestly it went off better than any of us expected. And so we are going to press our luck and try it again. Mare Carmody, Michael “Country” Carver, and myself have some new selections we’ve worked up and quite a few we didn’t get to in January. Farm to Fender will be back once again with their truckload of delicious edibles (get there early or miss out—that was the lesson in January). And, of course, our friends at SAB will be pouring miracles by the pintfull. Come as you are, friends, and leave feeling better about yourself. That’s how it is.

Just me and my noisemakers making noise while you try to drink quietly and sort out where you went wrong. Was it those parachute pants in the late 80s? Maybe. Maybe.

And..wait a minute...March 7th is Townes Van Zandt's birthday. So an excessively large portion of the evening will be devoted to his music. Alright--I'm looking forward to this!

FF @ UU - 7pm
2021 Kanuga Rd.
Hendersonville, NC 28739 [map]
Price: $15 (I think)

I’m opening this show for my friends Christine Stay and Aidan Quinn (collectively known as Friction Farm). I did this same thing last year with Bill, Paul, and trombonist Dave Wulfeck and am scheming to do something different—and equally fun—this time around. I’ll fill you in before then, but you want to put this on your calendar now, I think. UUFH has a really great room for this sort of thing—probably one of the best in Hendersonville, in my opinion. If you’ve not yet heard Friction Farm you’re in for a treat and if you already have you already know you want to hear them again. Aidan has promised to wear a different paisley shirt. I have purchased a paisley necktie in order to fit in.

King Possum plays and sings your favorite songs that we know how to do. Sorry, we don’t know that one. Um…nope we don’t know that one either. That one? We used to know it but forgot it a while back. Would you, perhaps, be interested in hearing a song involving the cleansing of barnyard fowl that may or may not be a metaphor for eternal salvation? No? Hrm…How about “Wagon Wheel?” Oh…sorry…we don’t know that one.

Private Concert
Price: Also Private

You probably aren’t attending this so I won’t see you there. Unless you are in which case I will. If you are there and don’t see me please call me and remind me that I’m supposed to be there. If I am there and do not see you I won’t call because I wasn’t really expecting to see you there. If neither of us are there how about we hook up and go get some fried chicken and pie?

5 Happy Things - 10am
110 Malphrus Road
Blufton, South Carolina 29910 [map]
Price: free free free

Mrs. Hoke and I will be sharing “5 Happy Things” with the good folks at UUC of the Lowcountry for their morning service. If you know anyone in/around the area kindly nudge them in our direction. I have eaten “Lowcountry Boil” a bunch of times and look forward to being in the land of its origin. I hope they have shrine or statue or maybe kids in this part of the country eschew lemonade and have Lowcountry Boil stands instead. I better stop—I’m getting myself hopeful here.

Savannah Songwriters' Series - 6pm
1651 East Victory Drive
Savannah, Georgia 31404 [map]
Price: free free free

Here's a photo from the last time I did this show. Man. It was fun. Man. That chicken was GOOD. Jefferson Ross and Linda McRae will BOTH be there for this evening and that all by itself makes it worth putting on pants and coming out. I think there is a sporting event being sported at the same time and maybe you prefer that sort of thing to fried chicken and handmade music. If that is the case I will very earnestly tell you that you can do better. But I get it, really. Lying on the sofa is easier than coming out to eat fried chicken and listen to handmade music. Plus: the great commercials. I'm pretty sure we will be selling things as well and I have rented a team of Shetland Ponies to stampede through the showroom during intermission (I don't have Clydesdale money. Sorry.). Anyway...this is going to be a seriously good show and I hope you will join us if you can. Also: GO WILDCATS! (They're playing, aren't they?)

5 Happy Things - 11am
3140 Troy Avenue
Lakeland, FL 33803 [map]
Price: free free free

Mrs. Hoke and I will be sharing “5 Happy Things” with the good folks in Lakeland at their morning service. If you know anyone in/around the area please give them a nudge in our direction for this service. After the service we will eat brunch somewhere. And then after that we’ll do something else. Sometime that night we’ll go to bed. We will, in all likelihood, breathe repetitively all day long and, if history can be utilized as a reliable predictor of future events, will blink our eyes at semi-regular intervals. More details can be found at www.everysinglethingidoalldaylong.net.

Eric Taylor Concert - 8pm
3140 Troy Avenue

Price: $15 adults/$7 students

I’ve been a fan of Eric Taylor’s music for years and more years and am truly honored to open this show for him. If you know folks in/around Lakeland please tell them to come out and support this great artist. I ran The Atlanta Marathon earlier this year with Eric Taylor’s music in my earbuds. I don’t know why I’m sharing that—did you think that was interesting? No? Sorry. How about a link to Eric's site instead so you can check out his music and stuff? Okay then: http://www.bluerubymusic.com/home/News.html

Hendersonville, NC 28792

Price: free free free

I am very excited about this show right here. What we have right here, friends, is the FIRST EVER “Gospel Brunch” in Hendersonville. Yes indeed. Mare Carmody, Michael “Country” Carver, and I have teamed up to bring this sorely needed event to our little town. Mrs. Hoke’s favorite food truck—Farm To Fender—will be on hand to provide delicious edibles for your stomach. SAB will provide their usual selection of fantastic libations. And the musicians will throw out a wide range of music to entertain and delight you. Mrs. Hoke and I used to attend Sunday brunch shows semi-regularly when we lived in Austin and I have wanted to do one here for years (plural). If you’ve never heard Mare & Country you’re in for a treat. And if you have you’re still in for a treat.

822 Locust Street
Hendersonville, NC 28792

Price: free free free

I’ve got a couple of projects I’m excited about for 2015. The first one is a subtle shift away from the “Todd Hoke and Whoever” thing I’ve been doing and more towards an actual band thing. More collaboration and that sort of good stuff. It’ll still be Bill, Paul, and myself but there’s also a talented drummer named Nancy Asch who should be with us in January. Band name: King Possum. Expect potholders and other branded merch soon.

First gig of 2015 right here. I’ll be debuting the song I wrote in the Hank Williams Cabin in Alexander City, Alabama, at this gig. It’s pretty good, I think. I actually co-wrote it with my Hank Williams Senior Bobblehead figurine. I might have to bring him to the gig so he can take what credit he’s due. I’ve taken a new-ish direction at these Poe House gigs and am now bringing a songbook with me of songs I love but don’t have 100% committed to memory right now. So there’s a touch more variety and a smattering more something else. Elvenmagic, let’s say. Also, I will have run a ½ marathon down in Travelers Rest the morning of this gig so expect me to complain throughout about my feet and/or legs hurting. Sounds awesome, doesn’t it? I can’t wait.

New Bern, NC 28560 [map]
Price: free free free

Mrs. Hoke and I will be presenting “5 Happy Things” at/for the morning service. I feel like we’ve done this enough times (and I’ve written about it here) that all of you know the gist of it. Yes? If you find yourself not, in fact, knowing the gist of it just ask the person sitting next to you. They probably know. Or they can loan you their notes. While I will not be wearing a necktie at this presentation, it will be the only service we’ve done where Rich has been around to join us and add to the music we provide for the service. Maybe he’ll wear a tie. I doubt it.

Down East Folk Arts Society Concert Series - 7:30pm

Price: $15 (discount for members, military, and students)

Night two of large fun with the DEFAS folks. The info for the performance above is quite similar to the info for this performance right here. One very important detail worth noting: I will wear a different necktie to this performance than the Friday night performance. (I’m a pro like that and damn the added weight and space in the suitcase!)

Price: $15 (discounts for members, military, & students)

This is going to be night one of two large nights of fun. I’m the opening act for the Down East Folk Arts Society’s 2014 concert series. Adding to the oomph is that my good friend Rich Brock will be along and he’s bringing his harmonicas with him (if you have any of my albums you’ve heard Rich’s tasteful playing). Staying consistent with my policy for performances where admission is charged: I will be wearing a necktie. I might also put new strings on my guitar. We’ll see.

Last month a couple of folks showed up at SAB to hear Paul and me because they had read about it in last month’s Ramblings (the monthly email thing I send out to tell folks when and where I'm doing what [plus lots of useful tips on fishing, fashion, and finance]). That’s encouraging. I enjoy writing my Ramblings and folks tell me they enjoy reading them and that’s probably enough right there but then some folks climbed up out of their La-Z-Boys and revved up the motortransport vehicle to come out and hear us play music live and in person while they drank great beer. Well now. Shucks. Thanks, persons. Thanks very much.

This show will be my first vineyard engagement ever. Though one time when Mrs. Hoke and I were still living in Austintown we joined some friends at a “grape stomp” at some picturesque vineyard way way out in the Texas Hill Country. Falls Creek Vineyard—does that sound right to you? I don’t know either. The grape stomping was purely recreational and our results were never intended for use in actual wine production in the same way sheep used in “mutton busting” events at your finer county fairs are never fully made over into tiny woolen mounts for wee little cowpersons. See? Right! Anyhow…what was I saying? I’ll be playing music at this vineyard. I used to—very very long ago—play a song called “Beaujolais” by The BoDeans. It couldn’t have been that hard…maybe I’ll poke around and see if I can relearn it for this my first vineyard engagement ever. People at vineyards like songs about wine, don’t they? It just makes sense. Yeah…this is going to be great. I guess I’ll just add that although I’ve never visited Parker-Binns Vineyard I feel pretty safe stating that there won’t be any mutton busting going on. This time.

Another night at our hometown brewery means great beer, lovely folks, and live music with no cover charge. Now, I dunno whether this happens every Thursday but when Paul and I were there last Thursday they had brezels and pizza from Underground Bakery. And if you don’t already know: this is a very good bit of news I’m sharing with you. I truly hope there aren’t any lost souls reading this email who eat Papa John’s/Dominos/Pizza Hut and think “Now this is pizza!” Because: Ew. And: No. Allow me, please, to point you in the direction of the pizzapies from Flat Rock Bakery, Mezzaluna, Mona Lisa, and West First (limiting myself to Greater Hendo here because it’s wherein I live—see?). I will now light a banana pepper scented candle in hopes you/they see the light, change your/their ways, and hereafter and always live a life filled with better pizza. Next month I’ll break the news to y’all about non-dairy creamer, but one step at a time. Yes. One step.

Brevard, NC 28712 [map]
Price: Members: Free. Non-Members: $5.

This show right here? This show is most especially for those among you who have asked me when I would be playing a “listening room” because 185 King Street is precisely that. Lights! Soundman! Stage! Spittoons! (maybe not spittoons) Also: Bill and Paul will both be joining me for this show. We did a trial run as a trio back in May at SAB and it was XL fun. Yessir. 185 King Street operates as a “private club” so there’s a $5 cover charge for non-members. But that money goes to the band so don’t worry about it too much. There are a couple of good restaurants in Brevard so if you want to make an evening of it I’d point you towards Hobnob, Quixote, and/or Square Root. It’s a full service thing I do, see?

What was that great beer I had at The Poe House when I played there on June 21st? Do you remember? I’m thinking it was some manner of IPA but perhaps it was some other manner of thing/beer. Hrm…nope. Can’t recall it. The beautiful beauty of The Poe House is that they always have something supertasty rotating through on tap. So even if you or I could remember whatever that beer was (Brigadoon IPA, maybe) it’s likely gone by now. Just like the original cast of CATS. Hey by way of public announcement I’ll also fill you in on the wonderful news that they’ve started having “champagne night” at The Poe House every Tuesday. Doesn’t that sound amazing? Check their website for more specific specifics. Because whose life couldn’t use a touch more bubbly in it? (End of PSA.)

He'll probably even let you have a cigar--a GOOD cigar--if you ask him nicely.

I would not steer you wrong: Be. At. This. Show. For super SUPER serious. It'll be Jefferson Ross, Ed Snodderly, Linda McRae with her kickbutt new trio: Devil Bell, and me and whoever I can trick into sitting in with me (I'm hoping to work up some songs as a trio with Paul Songy and Bill Pillmore between now and then--we'll see). Since the conference is likely moving next year this will--probably--be the last thing of this sort that I do at SAB. Until the next one, anyhow. If you were at our show last year you already know you need to be at it again this year. So do it. And bring folks with you!

SERFA 2014 - varies
Montreat Conference Center
Montreat, NC 28757 [map]
Price: depends

I think this is the last year SERFA will be in/near WNC. I have told you the last 2 years that you oughta' attend. I'm telling you the same thing this year. It's a music festival spread out through an old conference center in an idyllic setting. Good music. Friendly people. Did I mention idyllic setting? Sounds awful, don't it? I wouldn't attend either if I were you. There are more "formal" performances on Friday and Saturday nights so what you and yours could do is drive up and have supper, hang out for the big show (I think it's $10 or something similar to get in if you're not attending the whole conference), and then wander the hotel listening to other folks do their thing. Holler at me if you're interested and I'll give you more information--it is a seriously good time.

More on that later if it works out and nothing further on that if it don't. They just had the sound system at the Fellowship tweaked and the room is sounding better than ever. Plus the lights are very slimming. Y'all come!

I just remembered that there's a video snippet of me introducing Aidan & Christine at a previous performance at UUFH. You can find it right here on the website under Cinema and then scrolling down a bit--I think it's the 4th or 5th clip. Also: you can testdrive Aidan & Christine's music at their website: http://www.frictionfarm.com/.

This will be one of those career milestones: playing at my first chili-cookoff. But it's more than that, friends, because Frog Level is also hosting a "Homebrew Competition." Yes. TWO career milestones in one shot. I'm going to submit a pot of chili cooked by my own hands because playing for and winning a chili-cookoff would be even better. Bill Pillmore will be there too. Y'all come.

So it’ll be me, that I know for mostly certain. Unless I get raptured or otherwise uncontrollably detained. If the event I am raptured, I hereby bequeath all my stuff to Mrs. Hoke under the condition that she not move anything for a couple of months in case the folks in charge realize their error, unrapture me, and rapture her instead. So barring a rupturing I’ll be there playing music to distract you from your electronic devices while you drink beer and/or wine in one of the cooler rooms in all of Henderson County. And I’m including the bar at Tarheel Lanes in that figuring. Yup.

Take 3. Take one didn't fly because of snow. Take two got snuffed because I was snuffly/sneezy. But take three? It's gonna' happen. Unless there's a plague of locusts or frogs. Trinity has supper at 5:30 and then Mrs. Hoke and I do our thing at 6:30. I think there's some sort of charge to eat--$5 would be my guess. I'm pretty good at guessing stuff. If you've seen us present 5 Happy Things, this is similar but different. We have a song by a friend of mine (Lorna Roberts) woven throughout the talk. It's pretty neato and I'm looking forward to sharing it again.

Atlanta, Georgia [map]
Price: free to watch

I don't expect you want to come stand around Atlanta with Mrs. Hoke yelling at me when I trot by. Or maybe you do. Maybe you have given up television and sleeping in on Sunday mornings (which would also mean you've given up staying out on Saturday nights). And maybe having given up those things you are now searching for something to fill the space they've left. And maybe--just maybe--standing around Atlanta with Mrs. Hoke yelling at me when I trot by is EXACTLY the sort of thing you need right now in your life. No? Didn't think so.

Summit Coffee Songwriters Showcase - 8-10:30p
128 S. Main St.
Davidson, NC 28036 [map]
Price: free free free

This is an "in the round" show--something I enjoy doing a bunch and don't do enough. This one--specifically--is a "Songwriter of the Year" award performance and the winner (Hannah Miller from Nashville, TN) will be playing. As will Mike Vial from Ann Arbor, MI. And me. I think my friend Rob McHale is going to start the evening with a few songs also. So there will be a whole lot of music in different styles and from different perspectives. And one of the performers is award winning. Actually I'm award winning too--maybe I'll wear one of my race medallions to increase my stagecred. All these folks have stuff online if you want to take a taste of what the evening will offer. And yes, I could paste links here so you didn't have to search yourself but it's like that old Scandinavian adage: "Teach a man to Google and he will waste untold hours instead of doing the work that needs doing." You're welcome.

So I have 2 calendars right by my computer and they both agree that there will be a full moon on this night. So--to get you ready--here is a handy map of the moon. I wonder who got to name all this stuff. "Sea of Moisture?" I looked up Tycho and it's named after "the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe." You probably already knew that, didn't you? Do you think "Bay of Rainbows" is a San Francisco reference? Me neither.

My second ever time at Oskar Blues. I remember having fun the first time, but there was very good beer involved so I could be mistaken. If you live in/around WNC you might be interested to know that Oskar Blues is hosting a 4 mile race on March 15th at which I will also be appearing (in running shoes without my guitar). All entrants get a free beer and a chance to whup me good on the course. If you do not live in/around WNC then none of that stuff applies and you've probably moved on to something else by now anyway so my typing all this is just a waste of time, isn't it?

I hope you'll be there for this. Not because anything especially special is happening. Not that I know about anyhow. But I like seeing you there in the dim light that makes everyone look good. And maybe there IS something special happening. Wouldn't you hate to miss out? There will be a new moon this night, which means no moon and that seems somewhat Poe-ish. I am pretty sure there was a new moon the night the House of Usher Fell. Ditto the night the Tell-tale Heart told. Etc.

I was scheduled to play at SAB on 2/12. Had my stovepipe hat polished and my neckbeard trimmed in readiness to celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday. But then it started snowing and continued to snow and kept on snowing and then it snowed some more. And I was thinking "Okay. Well. This is an instance of extreme weather so I guess this will be the month I don't play at SAB and that's that." But then Kelly said no, they NEED me to play there this month. (She didn't actually say that but did ask if I wanted one of the other Wednesdays instead which is pretty much the exact same thing, don't you agree? No? Who asked you? Me? Oh yeah? YEAH? Oh...yeah? Okay then.) So anyhow I'll be there this night instead and will be passing out jugs of icemelt to everyone in attendance. Come on.

So let’s try that again: Are you ready to SHIFT IN YOUR SEAT UNCOMFORTABLY BECAUSE YOUR FOOT’S FALLEN ASLEEP, Waynesville? You are? Well COME ON THEN! RAAAAHR! (that’s a yelling sort of roar there at the end—just fyi)

And hey please note the change of date (booking mixup--see?). Unless you are seeing this for the first time right now in which case just note the date and take it from there. Yep.

My first public whatevering in 2014. I just heard a story that the way you ring in the New Year is suggestive of how you will spend it. That tidbit has zero bearing on this appearance, of course, but I like to give the impression that I know about stuff and things (in that order). Also, I just learned that my friend Bill Passalacqua will be around and I am 98% certain I will be able to trick him into sitting in for the night. Mrs. Hoke likes Bill. That should be enough. This’ll be the last day the brewery’s open before Christmas. I don’t think that’s significant, really, but I like sharing calendar-based information. Just like the Mayans. So I’ll be here and Paul Songy will show up with his instruments and make everything better by doing so. Also: Mrs. Hoke and I will bring some baked goods because we both have mothers who lose their minds every December and overwhelm us with foodstuffs. If you have a mother who does likewise feel free to bring stuff to share (SAB’s stout and chocolate are amazing together--true). Also: there might be a special guest joining us on the mic. But then again there might not so why am I loading you up with false hope and half promises? I don’t know. Sorry. Hope y’all join us anyhow. It’ll be more fun than a herd of reindeer ruining your roof with their pointy hooves.

If you haven't visited The Poe House yet you really oughta'--it's a very cool room with a solid "pub" vibe about it. Plus tasty pizzas from West First are delivered directly to your table. Anyway...Frog Level has lots of good beer and friendly folks right on the bank of Richland Creek...huh...I just looked it up to make sure it was a "creek" and not a "river." I wish the "creek" I’d had to play in as a kid had been as big as Richland Creek. Waynesville kids don’t know how good they’ve got it, I bet. Anyway—Bill will be with me and it’ll be his first time there. Or it’ll be their first time having him there. One of those.

As Meg and Todd have shared it with friends and family, they have discovered that it is powerful for others, too.  This presentation will leave you with a smile on your face and another tool for living a meaningful life.

Plus: apples and honey for all in attendance. This was almost the month I didn't play at SAB thereby snuffing out the once/month streak I've had playing there since they started hosting music. But I moved some stuff around and am sneaking in this Sunday afternoon show. Whew...aren't you relieved? Me too. 5-7p in July is a potentially uncomfortable time to play music in an un-airconditioned room. So this might be one of the very very rare shows where I perform in shorts and flipflops. If it's really hot I might perform while standing in a wading pool full of ice water. We'll see how it goes.

Photo above is from an in-the-round I did in Savannah with Jefferson, Linda, and Thomas Claxton. See how much fun we're having? We'll have even MORE fun with Miss Brown to You in the mix! Here's a blurb I wrote for SAB's website:

On Sunday, May 19th, an embarrassing amount of talent will be playing for free (FREE!) at Southern Appalachian Brewery in Hendersonville. The show will run from 5-9p. Really good beer will be available for purchase.

Kicking everything off is Todd Hoke. Todd’s the one who lives in Hendo and has tricked Andy and Kelly into letting him play at SAB once a month since they started hosting music. If you hang out at SAB and don’t know who Todd Hoke is, it ain’t his fault. (Unlike the many many other things that are, in fact, Todd’s fault.)

Next on the bill by way of Nashville, TN,  is Linda McRae. “Performing on clawhammer banjo, acoustic guitar, accordion and porchboard stompbox, Linda combines old-time sounds with universal themes of heartbreak & redemption offering an intriguing sepia postcard from the past that is vibrant and alive in the present.” www.lindamcrae.com

And then comes the master of southern gritty grooves, Jefferson Ross. “Based in Savannah, Georgia, where the Spanish moss hangs from ancient oaks like long torn veils, Jefferson employs his unique acoustic guitar style and southern, soulful voice to spin some of the finest story songs to come out of Deep Dixie in a long while.” www.jeffersonross.com

Closing the evening—all the way from Oklahoma City—is the mighty duo Miss Brown To You. “Miss Brown To You can capture you with their subtle ballads, soulful blues, sophisticated bop and swinging classical jazz, and will warm you with their colorful original songs.” (Note: Miss Brown To You is closing the show because no-one wanted to follow them. Fact.) www.missbrowntoyou.com

56 Commerce Street
Waynesville, NC 28786
USA [map]
Price: free free free

Musician, photographer, and all around good person Paul Songy will be joining me at Frog Level this evening. It's gonna be fun. This photo is just to orient those of you who've never been to Frog Level. There to the right you can see the bar where you can order beer (or another beer, depending). Also: stools. For sitting. Way to the back you can see the doors. That's where you come in from the street. Not visible but there nonetheless (just like gravity and Justin Bieber's ongoing appeal) are the restrooms which are along the rightmost wall. This is important to know after you've had a beer or two. I think that covers it.

11am
311 East Harris Street
Savannah, GA 31401 [map]
Price: free free free

I'm the guest musician for the Savannah UU Sunday service; I love being the guest musician. There's a guest speaker also: Rev. Gaye Ortiz. She'll be speaking on/talking about Barbara Brown Taylor's book, Altars in the World. I have tried to figure out how to shoehorn Chickenwashing into this service, but have failed. So I'll do appropriate stuff instead.

Also: I don't know why this is showing up after the evening thing with the Savannah Songwriters. 11am comes before 6pm--even I know that. I have tried a few different things but can't seem to crack the code on how to fix it so I guess this is just one of those imperfections we'll have to live with. We at Todd Hoke, Inc. apologize for any inconvenience you and yours may incur as a result.

This right here will be a ridiculously good night of music and funhaving. My coworkers for the evening: Jefferson Ross (jeffersonross.com) and Linda McRae (lindamcrae.com). Yes indeed. We'll be doing our thing at Johnny Harris and I am going to start doing sit-ups now to make up for the overeating I'll be doing that night.

From Hillbilly Haiku's website: "Todd Hoke and Jeff Talmadge in a no-holds barred, winner-take-all-bragging-rights grudge match in the Hillbilly Haiku living room. Toe to toe and song to song, quip for quip they'll have at it all evening long. We saw Todd and Jeff do this at a music conference and we knew immediately it would be a house concert home-run. Lucky for us, they are gonna rumble in the H3C living room!  :-))))"

My parents (pictured here--Lester and Jody--Father and Mother Hoke to you punk kids) will be at SAB for this show. It'll be their first time ever at the brewery. But it will not even be close to being their first time hearing me play so please come distract and/or entertain them because they've heard it all before. Several times. Hey but something BRAND NEW is that my friend Bill Pillmore will be sitting in and adding some electric guitar and harmony vocals to the evening. We've been practicing and it's going to be good. For serious. Lastly: all songs will be rendered in Sepiatone.

Biltmore Estate
Asheville, NC [map]
Price: $32

I am one among many running the inaugural Asheville Marathon at Biltmore Estate. If you are in WNC that weekend you might be interested to know that buying a spectator ticket for the race is cheaper than regular admission charges to Biltmore. Or you might not care at all one way or the other. How am I supposed to know what you care about? Also of note: this is Mother Hoke's birthday and she will be there cheering me on. You don't care about that either? Man. You are picky.

Price: free free free

First time playing in Waynesville. Also first time playing anywhere named "Frog Level." Mrs. Hoke and I sampled several of Clark's brews when we visited a month or so ago and they are mighty tasty. I think they land on the malty end of things as far as beer goes (if that's the sort of information you like to have in your head). There's a barbecue place up the street that delivers to the brewery. And Waynesville has other stuff too. Galleries and whatnot. And hey Waynesville is also home to a monument to the last shot fired in the Civil War according to Roadside America. That's worth a visit, don't you think?

First time at the brewery in 2013. I might have spicy brownies made by my own hands. Let's say I will and leave it at that. I think they will go really well with SAB's stout. Come prove me wrong. Also: there will be music. And beer. And an open forum for you to declare--in public--that this year, dammit, you won't make the same mistakes you made in 2012!

KEOS 89.1 FM
Bryan, Texas [map]
Price: free free free

I'll be doing an on-air thing with my friend Joe Angel. He is primarily having me on so he can have an opportunity to visit with Mrs. Hoke after we're done. I know this because he told me so. I've been a guest on Joe's show several times and it's always fun--you can listen online if you are so inclined (www.keos.org). I suppose you could also drive to Bryan/College Station and tune in thataway but that seems like a lot of work. And a waste of gasoline. Free totebags for all listeners! Hey now!

My first time playing at French Broad, but not my first time hanging out at their space and far far from my first time enjoying their tasty product(s). It's a cozy little room and the show is early enough that you can be back home in your pajamas with your hair in rollers before weather and sports on the news. Come out come out!

Thanksgiving is a time of traditions. What Thanksgiving Day spread would be complete without canned cranberry sauce (intact in its natural can shape) nestled on the table between the rolls dumped out of a plastic bag, the de-jarred gravy, and the Mayflower shaped spittoon? The image above captures a lifelong Thanksgiving Day tradition in the Hoke Household: The First Male Child (me) dons the Buffalo Hat while his mother (Mother Hoke to y’all) wears the Raven Hat. Elsewhere in the household, my sister sports the traditional Red Wing hockey jersey while Father Hoke is wrapped in the family’s heirloom velour jogging suit. I come from a family of traditions and tradition-holders, I guess is my point. You do too, perhaps. Another tradition is that someone will say something to someone else that will be taken the wrong way and leave me wishing I were hanging out at SAB instead. Which I will be on November 28th. I hope you’ll join me and whoever else shows up. Music and beer for all comers. Anyone in a Buffalo Hat gets in free. (So does everyone else, but don’t tell the Buffalohatted people.) Thatisall.

Beer and/or Cocktail. Music. Repeat. - 9-11p
1042 Haywood Road
Asheville, NC 28806
USA [map]
Price: No Cover of Any Sort

It’s fall (or autumn if you’re one of those people who prefer autumn to fall). Halloween has come and gone and Thanksgiving is coming down the pike. And so I’ll do my part to help you prepare with an evening of songs about Pilgrims, pumpkins, Pocahontas (mostly from the Disney film, of course), Plymouth, and pie. I won’t be doing any songs about corn, custard, cranberries, Concord, or smallpox. Just keeping you informed here. If tradition persists, the bar will be open. Which is helpful in prepping for Thanksgiving according to the both the Surgeon General and my Uncle Leon. Guitar, ukulele, harmonica, and some sort of stomp-percussion will be featured. Hope you’ll show up. Nothing’s more depressing than an evening of Thanksgiving preparation spent alone. Alright now.

Wonderful Wednesdays @ Trinity Presbyterian Church - 5:30 (eat); 6:30 (listen)
900 Blythe Avenue
Hendersonville, NC 28792
USA
828-692-6114 [map]
Price: $6 to eat; music is free

I played for Trinity's Wonderful Wednesdays Series roughly 51 Wednesdays ago, I think. Give or take a Wednesday. I do remember that it was a fun evening. I have been told that the meal this night will be "upscale" so you will want to plan accordingly. Unless you've sworn off upscale eating for November. Or perhaps you could use this meal as a training meal for Thanksgiving. That seems like a good idea, right there.

Price: $5 (20 quarters/50 dimes/100 nickels/500 pennies)

Kitchen till 9p. Drinks till 9:30. Is there more that you require? I will be providing music and have heard from people who know stuff that this is a quietish "listening room" if you like that kind of thing. I know that I do. $5 cover. And because you are paying to get in I will iron a shirt with my own hands and wear a tie of my own choosing. Because I care that much about you. See? Thanks.

822 Locust Street
Hendersonville, NC 28792

Price: free free free

Music? Yes. Great Beer? Yes. Costume contest? Yes. I will have a moderately awesome (by my very high standards) prize on hand. Someone will judge. If Judge Reinhold is there we will have him judge. If not, Mrs. Hoke will probably judge in which case I will clue you in that she is a real sucker for the Smurfs so dressing as a Smurf would probably win it for you. She also likes Vikings. A Viking Smurf would probably make her mind explode with delight. Okay...okay. I've said too much.

Batkat House Concerts
Potluck + Music = Houseconcert. - 6-7p Potluck; 7-9p Music
Longmont, Colorado
USA
303-973-3687 [map]
Price: $10-$15 suggested donation

I'll be in Colorado to run in the Boulder Marathon and am going to do a houseconcert while I'm there. Or maybe it's the other way around. It has taken a couple of years to coordinate a date for me to play at my friend Mary Ray's house concert series. I am not certain, but this might be the highest altitude at which I have played a house concert. Which will be the excuse I use if I am off for some reason. (insert rimshot here) Houseconcerts are my A-#1 absolute favorite places to perform and I hope you'll join us if you're in the area. And please: kindly forward the info to your friends and/or relations in the area--it WILL be a fun evening. That's not even a question. Nope. Contact Mary (303-973-3687/mary@batkatmusic.com) for info or to reserve a seat. Thanks.

I've played the open mic at The Altamont a bunch of times and have hung out there a fair bit beyond that, but this will be my first time OFFICIALLY playing on their stage. It's a laid-back atmosphere full of friendly, smiling folks and their tail-wagging dogs. Ping-pong? Yep. Foosball? Check. Corn-hole? You bet. And beer. And a full bar. And Nona Mia conveniently located right next door if you want something to eat while you drink. It'll be a fun evening and I'm really looking forward to it.

5 Happy Things - 10am
505 Glasgow Lane
Hendersonville, NC 28739 [map]
Price: free free free (though someone will pass a plate in front of you at some point--that's just how it is)

Okay, hang with me here. Mrs. Hoke and I are "doing" the service for the Hendersonville Unitarian Universalists who are meeting at the Synagogue during some renovations of the UU Fellowship's sanctuary. By "doing" the service I mean that Mrs. Hoke will be sermonizing and I'll be doing music. Our theme will be "5 Happy Things" which is an exercise we've been doing for a while: recitation of 5 things over the course of the day that have made us happy. Big things. Little things. Profound things. Silly things. Whatever sort of things make us happy. It should be a fun service and we're looking forward to it.

Come hang out and get not judged by Todd Hoke on August 22nd. There will be beer available for purchase and plenty of music for you to interpretive dance to. Or sound equipment to beat on. Whatever.

Providing music for our local co-op's open house event thing. I have never performed at a co-op. Or I cannot remember ever performing at a co-op previously, anyhow. I have performed on the back porch of a bait shop several times so suspect it'll be similar. Less grubs, probably.

Sure. I get it. You’ve got a lot of options in your life. And a multitude of distractions what with the topnotch programming available with even the most basic of cableplans. But I have had my name printed on a tshirt, and that should count for something in this crazy mixedup world. Which is my way of inviting you to come and enjoy (or whatever) an evening of music and beer. Or beer and music, depending on your priorities. Thanks.

Back at Southern Appalachian Brewery. I had a cake last month and folks seemed to enjoy that. But I won't have cake this time. So don't show up asking for cake, I guess is what I'm telling you. If you want cake, perhaps you should pack some along for the evening. "Always be prepared by packing a cake for your outing" is what Benjamin Franklin said. Or maybe it was Betty Crocker. One of those.

Daylong Music Festival - 11a-9p
701 Warren Wilson Road
Swannanoa, NC 28778
USA [map]
Price: $25 in advance; $30 at the gate
I'm mighty proud to be part of the first annual Green Swan Music Festival. The festival is serving as a benefit for Asheville Greenworks (a local group of do-gooders that does good stuff like tree planting, environmental cleanups, creation and maintenance of green spaces, and more--folks worthy of our support, I thinks) Check out the list of performers on their website--it's going to be a great day of great music. And food. And music. And beer. And music. I'm the closing act on the smaller stage 7:40-8pm. In case you don't know, the festival is being held at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa. Which is friggin' gorgeous. Just fyi, there.

I have now been playing monthly at our little brewery for a solid year. True. Shoot--I might bring a cake or something. Or pork rinds, maybe. Or cake. Also: I will be wearing a new hat. Exciting, no? And there may be film folks there filming something for a film. I'm not sure about that part, but you probably wanna wear something slimming just in case. Having played music in various capacities for years I'll tell you that it is a true gift to have a local venue that I like playing at that continues to invite me back. Come show some love and/or drink some beer. Thanks. (fyi: they also have wine available if that is how you show your love)
